After travelling all day yesterday, we decided on a leisurely day in Galway. We didn't all stay together, but variously we visited St.Joseph's Cathedral, the market, the Galway Museum and general sightseeing. Late in the afternoon we drove to Atherny. Ken was keen to visit the town based on his love of the song 'The Fields of Atherny'. While we were there, we booked a Sunday Lunch for tomorrow. Returned to the Front Door for the second night for an excellent meal. Had a couple of drinks in Galway before returning to the hotel for a nightcap or two.
I think most of us had a bit of a lay-in today because we weren't due to meet up together until 13:30hrs. This gave us enough time to get to Atherny for Sunday Lunch at the Old Barracks cafe, where we were all agreed that we had a super meal. After an afternoon at leisure we assembled for a final evening in Galway. We started off in Murphy's which served Guinness in the traditional way, finishing up in Tis Coili's bar which had traditional Irish music on - not to be missed.
For myself, I would recommend Galway and the surrounding area as an excellent place to visit. The ferry crossing from Holyhead to Dublin was very rough, but, I suspect that for early January we had uncharacteristically good weather for the week that we were here, thereby enabling us to get about and see both the city and the area. The pubs and restaurants are busy at this time of year, so I don't know what it must be like at peak holiday season - manic presumably.
