Day 1

Ken, Adrian, Peter and Eddie set off from Huddersfield to Whitby on the Trans-Pennine Express to Middlesbrough where we met up with Kevin. After a 2 hour wait we caught the train to Whitby followed by a short walk to the Khyber Mount Guest House. The weather has been good until about 6pm when the heavens opened.

We booked a meal at the Granby Hotel, situated just around the corner, and accompanied by a couple of pints of Leeds Pale draught beer. This was followed by a pint of Copper Dragon at Whitby Rowing Club. Ken and Kevin had further refreshment, the rest of us had an early night.

Day 2

Arose fairly early for breakfast at 08:15 hrs. and caught a glimpse of Peter going out for his daily morning walk. Spent the day in Whitby. First thing we did was cross the river and climb the 199 steps towards the Abbey, which is closed whilst setting up for a TV music event at the week-end. Had a look in the church adjacent to the Abbey. Walking a bit further along the road we came to the Whitby Brewery. A bit early for alcohol, and the shop was closed, so we headed back down the steps into Whitby.

Being now mid-day, we went into a cafe and had a cream tea each and very nice it was. All except Ken walked to the end of the harbour wall. upon returning, Ken and Kevin went off to buy Kelly - the guest house owner - a birthday card while Eddie, Peter and myself treat ourselves to a dairy ice cream.

Richard joined us at tea time today, having travelled here on his motor bike. After a short relaxation in our rooms we headed out for our evening meal at Papa's where we all had the Senior's Special of Haddock followed by Syrup sponge. Excellent value ay £ 8.99 for a two-course meal. We finished the evening off at the Broad Inn.

Day 3

After an early breakfast we headed down to the railway station to catch the 10am steam special to Pickering. We had a light lunch and then had a walk around the railway yard. We arrived back in Whitby for about 5pm and had an early meal of various pie, mash and mushy peas before returning to our digs.

After a relaxing couple of hours we headed for the Little Angel pub where most of us had a couple of pints of the pub brewed 'Kraken' ale, and very nice it was. Peter, Eddie and Richard headed back to the digs while the rest of us had a couple of pints of cask Tetley beer.

Day 4

The intention today was to catch a bus to Saltburn and stop off at Staithes on the way back for a meal. Unfortunately the weather, which had been kind to us up to now, took a turn for the worse. So, although we made it to Saltburn, we wandered on the sea front for a while before climbing up the steps to the town where we had drinks in a cafe. The wether not being too good, we went straight back to Whitby.

Up to today, the weather had been pretty good. We'ed had showers, but plenty of hot sun, whereas today was chilly and raining almost non-stop from mid-day. We had an evening meal at the Pier, being unable to get a table at the Granby, which turned out to be pretty good. This was followed by drinks in the Ship Inn, where the bar girl was extremely rude and bossy, and the Little Angel pub where the staff were the complete opposite.

Day 5

Eddie and Peter returned home today, departing from Scarborough railway station. We all caught the bus to Scarborough. The weather wasn't good so after a drink in a cafe, they caught their train and the rest of us returned to Whitby.

We had our evening meal in the Granby washed down with a couple of pints of Leeds Pale Ale. Although Ken, totally out of character only had a half pint. He did make up for it, though, when we went to the Little Angelwhere he downed five pints of beer. He really is a bad influence on us. He has this saying "We might as well have the one we came for", but he even exceeds that.

Day 6

Ken went to Fortunes to buy some kippers. And then there were three - Richard left after breakfast, leaving Ken, Kevin and myself, but taking Ken's kippers with him. Leaving the bed and breakfast we walked along the promenade to Sandsend where we had non-alcoholic drinks in a pub.

Had our evening meal in the Fishermans Wife fish restaurant, which was excellent. Lots of the pubs were full and people queuing to enter, so we eventually had a drink in the Whitby Friendship Rowing Club. The Copper Dragon beer ran off after our first pint and by accident we drank the dreaded John Smith's. We finished up the evening at the Black Horse which previously we had been unable to get in, being full.

Day 7

Last full day before we head home. Took a steady stroll down to the railway station to buy tickets for tomorrow. Did a circular walk finishing at The Whistlestop Cafe at the railway station. Wandered around the old town for a while before buying three pulled pork, stuffing and apple tea cakes from the Greedy Pig shop, which we ate at the digs. After a short rest we headed down to the harbour where, even though it was a bit chilly, we had a Yorvale dairy ice cream.

Day 8

So, it's time to leave and go home, but not until after one final wonderful breakfast.
