We arrived at our destination, the Royal Oak guesthouse sometime just before midnight. We had, earlier, met up with each other at various times and places, on the East Coast railways train to Aberdeen. The wind which had been a feature of earlier days had now subsided, so a good crossing on the ferry to Kirkwall was had.
Day 1 - Friday
Had a good late breakfast to set us up for the day and afterwards departed for South Ronaldsay. Near St.Margaret's Hope is the Tomb of the Eagles, which has a stone age tomb and a bronze age site. Leaving here, we headed back north to the Italian Chapel. This chapel was built by Italian POW's in their spare time whilst they had been engaged in building the Churchill Barrier. The Churchill Barrier was built to prevent German warships from entering Scapa Flow during WW2 and links the Main Island with South Ranaldsay via intermediate islands.
We had a very enjoyable evening meal at The Shore bar / restaurant in Kirkwall followed by a few beers before retiring for the night.
